Scrum Master vs. Certified Scrum Master

What’s the difference between the SM/SPO and the CSM/CSPO?

These Scrum credentials are the only Scrum Master and Product Owner credentials endorsed by Scrum Inc. and Dr. Jeff Sutherland, the co-creator of Scrum and inventor of Scrum@Scale.

Certified Scrum courses are endorsed by Scrum Alliance, a non-profit Scrum credentialing organization.

Generally speaking, the Scrum curriculum goes beyond that strictly required for Certified courses. The Scrum curriculum includes the Lean principles, Scrum Master & Product Owner techniques, real-world cross-industry case studies, proven patterns for improving team and organizational performance, and an overview of how the Scrum roles scale in an organization.

The Scrum Program has a global community of expert trainers and thought leaders who have demonstrable experience improving team and organizational performance across industries and cultures. Our Scrum Trainers bring a range of real-world case studies and examples into their teaching.

Can you elaborate on the meaning behind the credentialing body?

These Scrum credentials are the only Scrum credentials endorsed by Scrum Inc., the global authority on the most widely used Agile Framework, and Dr. Jeff Sutherland, the co-creator of Scrum and inventor of Scrum@Scale.

Certified Scrum courses are endorsed by Scrum Alliance, a non-profit Scrum credentialing organization.

What is the process for each credential to be renewed?

The SM & SPO credentials are valid for one year. To renew your credential, you will need to demonstrate the retention of your Scrum knowledge by taking an examination and sharing your experience and results over the last year. The cost is $50 USD for students in countries that rank in the top 100 GDP per capita (PPP). The cost for students in all other countries is $25 USD.

The CSM/CSPO credentials are valid for two years. To renew your CSM or CSPO, you will need to submit SEUs and pay a fee of $100 per credential. There is no recertification exam upon renewal.

Does a certification last a different amount of time?

In general, Scrum credentials are valid for one year. In today’s fast-changing market, we want to ensure that our LSMs and LSPOs have the latest knowledge from the field and can stay at the cutting edge of the business market.

Certified Scrum credentials are generally valid for two years.

Are the exams different?

The Scrum exams are developed and maintained by Scrum Inc. and assess knowledge on the Learning Outcomes prescribed for each course. The Learning Outcomes go beyond the basic 3-5-3 of Scrum. As an example, the Scrum Master Curriculum includes lean principles and methods for identifying and removing waste from a system. It includes the patterns of high-performing teams. That is, the known practices that teams who achieve a 4x increase in velocity do. It also gives an introduction to how the role scales in the Scrum@Scale environment.

The Scrum exam includes 30 multiple choice questions pulled from a larger pool of questions. Students will have up to two tries to pass the exam and must earn a score of 75% or better to earn the credential. Once started, there is no session time limit on the exam and progress will be saved allowing students to leave the exam and come back to it at a later time.

The Certified Scrum Master exam is developed by Scrum Alliance and test knowledge of the Scrum Guide. The exam involves 50 questions and must be completed within a 60 minute timebox with at least 37 correct answers to pass.  There is not an exam associated with the Certified Scrum Product Owner course.

Do they mean different things in industry?

Both credentials are industry recognized indicators of Scrum knowledge.

The Scrum Master credential formally recognizes your knowledge of lean principles, Scrum Master & Product Owner techniques, patterns of high-performing teams, and how the Scrum Master role scales in an organization.

The Scrum Program is the brainchild of Dr. Jeff Sutherland the co-creator of the Scrum Framework. There are currently over 6000 credentialed students worldwide and growing aggressively as word of mouth testimonials grow on platforms like Linkedin.
